Sarnath Deer Park (Mrigadava or Isipatana) is the sacred grove where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dhammachakkapavattana Sutta) to his five disciples approximately 2,500 years ago. The name Mrigadava means "deer sanctuary" and the area has been associated with deer since ancient times. Today the park within the archaeological site of Sarnath contains the ruins of monasteries, the Dhamek Stupa, and the remnants of Ashoka's structures. Deer still roam the park in small numbers, maintaining the ancient tradition. The peaceful green setting is an important pilgrimage destination for Buddhists from across the world.
