Zangla Palace

Ruined royal palace and fort of the old Zanskar kingdom, linked to scholar Alexander Csoma de Koros.

Zangla Palace sits on a ridge above Zangla village, once the second capital of the Zanskar kingdom alongside Padum. The ruined fort was home to the Namgyal royal family, and the Hungarian scholar Alexander Csoma de Koros lived here in the 1820s while compiling an early Tibetan dictionary. A small monastery and nunnery stand nearby. The palace offers wide views over the Zanskar River and surrounding villages, and a caretaker in the village can arrange interior access.
