Sani Monastery stands about 6 km from Padum and is widely considered the oldest religious site in Ladakh and Zanskar. Unlike most gompas built on hilltops, Sani sits on flat ground around the Kanika Stupa, believed to date to the Kushan era. It belongs to the Drukpa Kagyu order and is the only Zanskar monastery with a resident nunnery. A large Padmasambhava statue stands in an adjoining lake, and the annual Naro Nasjal festival draws visitors from across the valley.
