Barkot is the last major town travellers pass through before reaching Yamunotri, set on the banks of the Yamuna river at around 1220 metres elevation. Known for its apple orchards and sweeping views of the Bandarpunch mountain range, the town has shops selling trekking gear, warm woollens and general pilgrimage essentials. Most Char Dham travellers choose to rest overnight here before continuing the final stretch toward Janki Chatti and the demanding trek up to the temple.
