Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary stretches across the Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges, forming part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and sharing forest cover with the neighbouring Bandipur and Nagarhole reserves. Declared a sanctuary in the 20th century, it supports a rich mix of wildlife including elephants, gaur, deer, leopards and a wide variety of birds. Jeep safaris through the reserve give visitors a good chance of sightings, making it one of the more reliable wildlife experiences in the Western Ghats.
