Tipu Mahal and Hyder Mahal are twin palace structures inside Vellore Fort, named for Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali, the eighteenth century rulers of Mysore. Though the fort itself was built by Vijayanagara kings in the sixteenth century, these two buildings were added later and once held around two hundred rooms each. Today the Archaeological Survey of India maintains both structures, which offer visitors a glimpse into the fort's later Mysorean history alongside its earlier Vijayanagara origins.
