Located roughly six kilometers from central Ujjain, the Bhartrihari Caves are believed to have served as the meditation retreat of Bhartrihari, stepbrother of King Vikramaditya and a celebrated poet-philosopher in his own right. The caves are carved into rock and estimated to be over two thousand years old, carrying sculptures and inscriptions from that era. Adjacent to the Gadkalika Temple, the site offers a quiet, historically layered stop for travelers interested in Ujjain's literary and spiritual past beyond its major temples.
