Ambalpady, about three kilometers from Udupi, is a well known Shakti kendra centered on two 500 year old temples dedicated to Mahakali and Janardhana. The site draws local devotees more than tourists, offering a low key, authentic stop for travelers interested in Udupi's older Shakti worship traditions rather than its more famous Vaishnavite sites.
