Mukkombu (Upper Anicut)

Cauvery river barrage and popular picnic spot where the river splits into three channels.

Mukkombu, also called the Upper Anicut, marks the point where the Cauvery River divides into three channels, its name literally meaning three branches in Tamil. Built across the river by British engineer Sir Arthur Cotton in the nineteenth century, the barrage regulates water flow into the delta region below. Its landscaped surroundings and riverside setting have made it a well loved picnic and weekend outing spot for families from Trichy and nearby towns.
