Parunthumpara takes its name from the Malayalam words for eagle and rock, describing the hill's distinctive silhouette rising above the surrounding plantations. Sitting at an elevation of around twelve hundred meters, the spot has grown popular in recent years for its quiet, uncrowded views over the Idukki countryside. Fewer facilities and a more local feel set it apart from Thekkady's better known viewpoints. Visitors typically combine it with other nearby plantation stops on a half day route.
