Baleshwar Mahadev Temple Group

A cluster of west facing Shiva temples with star shaped sanctums, built by King Shivagupta Balarjuna in the 8th century.

The Baleshwar Mahadev Temple Group sits near the Teevar Dev monument and consists of several Shiva shrines on raised platforms similar in style to the Lakshmana Temple. Two of the temples face west rather than the usual east, an unusual choice among Sirpur's structures, and their sanctums form a star shape from two overlapping squares. Excavated artwork shows courtly figures in 8th century dress, and one shrine holds a marble Shiva linga. The cluster reflects the patronage of the same king who commissioned much of Sirpur's later building.
