The junction where Mall Road meets The Ridge is Shimla's most storied crossroads, named after an 1892 episode in which Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala reportedly eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy and was subsequently banned from the city, prompting him to build Chail as his own summer capital. Today a lively gathering spot for locals and visitors, it offers panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges and the valley below. A prominent statue of freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai stands at the point as its most visible landmark.
