The Kalka–Shimla Toy Train is a UNESCO World Heritage Railway that runs 96 kilometres through the Shivalik Hills from Kalka to Shimla, passing through 102 tunnels, over 800 bridges, and numerous sharp curves as it climbs from 656 metres to 2,076 metres. Built by the British between 1898 and 1903, the narrow-gauge railway was the lifeline connecting the summer capital of British India to the plains. The journey through misty forests, mountain villages, and dramatic viaducts takes approximately 5–6 hours and is considered one of the great mountain railway experiences in the world. It remains a working railway operated by Indian Railways.
