Nauchowki

Nine carved marble pavilions on Rajsamand Lake's embankment, home to India's longest Sanskrit inscription, the Raj Prasasti.

The Nauchowki forms the ornate southern embankment of Rajsamand Lake, a row of nine marble pavilions commissioned by Princess Charumati in gratitude to Maharana Raj Singh I. Carvings of deities, the sun god's chariot and birds cover every surface. Twenty seven marble slabs along the ghats bear the Raj Prasasti, a 1017 stanza Sanskrit inscription recognised as the longest of its kind in the country. Photographers favour the soft morning light here.
