One of the eight most sacred tirthasthalas of Prayagraj, the Someshwar Mahadev Temple stands on the Yamuna bank at Arail village opposite the Allahabad Fort. According to legend, the temple was established by Chandra, the moon god, who worshipped Lord Shiva here to be cured of leprosy, giving the site its identity as Som Tirtha. The temple finds mention in the Padma Purana and Shiva Purana and draws large gatherings of pilgrims during Kumbh, Ardh Kumbh, and Maha Shivratri.
