Pandalam Valiya Koyikkal Temple stands on the bank of the Achankovil River, about sixteen kilometres from Pathanamthitta, within the grounds of the old Pandalam palace. Tradition holds that Ayyappa, the deity of Sabarimala, was raised here as the foster son of the Pandalam king, making the town second only to Sabarimala in significance for devotees. The temple's design echoes the Sabarimala shrine itself, and pilgrims often stop here before continuing their journey.
