Aranmula Sree Parthasarathy Temple sits on the banks of the Pampa River, about sixteen kilometres from Pathanamthitta, and ranks among the 108 Divyadesams sacred to Vaishnavites. Tradition holds that Arjuna built the temple to atone for killing Karna, one of five shrines the Pandavas are said to have raised in the region. The temple lends its name to the Aranmula Vallamkali, the century-old snake boat race held on the Pampa each Onam.
