Tangtse Gompa

Buddhist monastery en route to Pangong, home to the venerated Kyoba Rimpoche statue.

Tangtse Gompa is built into a rock cleft beneath a ruined fortress in Tangtse village, roughly forty kilometres before Pangong Tso on the road from Leh. Most travelers drive straight past it, but the monastery holds the venerated talking statue of Kyoba Rimpoche and features detailed woodwork rarely found elsewhere. A signed access lane leads to the site beyond the local police checkpoint, and driving through the village rather than the bypass gives the best view.
