Chhatris of Orchha

Fourteen riverside cenotaphs honouring Orchha's rulers, best seen at sunset from the Betwa riverbank.

The Chhatris of Orchha, also called the royal cenotaphs, line the banks of the Betwa river as a set of fourteen memorial towers built for the Bundela Maharajas. Each chhatri rises on a stepped platform supported by carved pillars, with narrow internal stairways leading to upper viewing levels. The site is best visited near sunset, when the silhouettes of the cenotaphs against the river and sky make it one of the most photographed spots in Orchha.
