The Government Botanical Garden was laid out in 1848 under Scottish horticulturist W.G. McIvor of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Spread across 22 hectares on the lower slopes of Doddabetta, it is divided into six sections including a fern house, an Italian Garden built by World War I prisoners of war, a conservatory, and terraced nurseries.
The centrepiece is a 20-million-year-old fossilised tree trunk displayed at the garden centre. Every May, the garden hosts the annual Flower Show as part of Ooty Summer Festival - one of the most attended events in Tamil Nadu. Entry fee applies.
