Avalanche Lake

A tranquil high-altitude reservoir 28 km from Ooty ringed by tea estates and shola forest, named after a landslide in 1823 and a habitat for the endangered Nilgiri tahr.

Avalanche Lake sits at around 2,300 metres, about 28 km from Ooty. The valley takes its name from a massive landslide in 1823. Ringed by tea estates and shola forest, it offers a quieter alternative to the busier attractions in town.

Fishing is permitted under a Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department licence, and the area is a known habitat for the Nilgiri tahr, gaur, sambar deer, and diverse birdlife. Entry may require a forest permit as the area falls within a protected zone. Carry warm clothing - temperatures drop sharply after sunset.
