Ensa Monastery

Nubra Valley · India

Ensa Monastery

A small 250 year old monastery near Panamik, reached by a short trek and tended by a single monk.

Ensa Monastery perches on a rocky outcrop above Panamik, roughly an hour or two's walk from the village. Only one monk resides here, and the hall holds a few modest Buddha statues rather than elaborate decoration. Its appeal lies less in scale and more in the quiet of the walk and the setting, a lesser visited counterpart to Nubra's bigger gompas.
