The Great Stupa of Sariputra stands within the Nalanda ruins as the most visually striking structure on site, built originally by Ashoka and expanded over seven later accretions into a stepped, pyramid like form. Flights of stairs lead up its tiers, flanked by carved niches and surviving sculpture fragments. Dedicated to Sariputra, one of Buddha's foremost disciples, it forms the natural centrepiece of any walk through the ruins.
