Vindhyachal Temple

A major Shakti Peetha on the Vindhya hills in Mirzapur dedicated to Goddess Vindhyavasini, drawing millions of pilgrims annually and forming the anchor of the Vindhyachal Dham circuit.

Vindhyachal Temple on the Vindhya hills in Mirzapur is one of the most important Shakti Peethas in North India, dedicated to Goddess Vindhyavasini, the goddess who dwells in the Vindhya mountains. The temple is the anchor of the Vindhyachal Dham, a triangular pilgrimage circuit that also includes the Ashtabhuja Devi Temple and the Kali Khoh Temple. According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, Goddess Vindhyavasini appeared here to fulfil a cosmic purpose and chose to remain permanently in the Vindhya hills. The temple draws millions of pilgrims annually, with the largest footfall during Navratri in both spring and autumn, when a continuous stream of devotees arrives from across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. The ghats along the Ganga at Vindhyachal add a sacred riverfront dimension to the pilgrimage, and devotees traditionally take a holy dip before ascending to the temple.
