Edakkal Caves

Prehistoric rock shelters with ancient carvings, about 10km from Meppadi, reached via a hilltop climb.

Around 10 km from Meppadi, the Edakkal Caves are a pair of natural rock shelters on Ambukuthi Hill, formed by a boulder wedged between two rock faces. The site holds carvings believed to date back thousands of years, among the earliest evidence of human habitation in the region. Reaching the caves involves a moderate climb up a rocky trail, rewarded partway up with wide views over the Wayanad countryside. Entry is ticketed and basic visitor facilities are available.
