Established in 1595, Kamalabari Satra stands as one of Majuli's oldest and most influential monastic institutions, long recognized as a center for Assamese art, culture, and classical study. It was here that Sattriya dance developed the reputation that eventually earned it recognition as a classical Indian dance form. Resident monks, known as bhakats, continue daily prayer and performance traditions within the satra's halls, alongside training in mythological sculpture. Repeated monsoon flooding over the centuries has damaged parts of the complex, yet it remains a living center of practice rather than a static monument.
