Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal in Madurai is a spectacular 17th-century royal palace built in 1636 by the Nayak king Thirumalai Nayakkar. The palace is a remarkable example of Dravidian and Italian architectural fusion, featuring massive pillars, arched colonnades, and an imposing throne chamber. The original palace was much larger but much of it was demolished by Thirumalai's grandson. What remains — the Swargavilasa (the main hall) and the Natyamahal (dance hall) — is still impressively grand. A sound-and-light show is held every evening, narrating the history of Madurai's Nayak rulers in a dramatic setting.
