Meenakshi Temple Night Ceremony

A nightly ceremony at Madurai's Meenakshi Temple where the silver image of Lord Shiva is ceremonially brought to Goddess Meenakshi's chamber — a ritual performed for centuries.

The Meenakshi Temple Night Ceremony (Thiruvanandal) is one of the most remarkable temple rituals in India, performed every night at the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai. In this ancient ceremony, the silver image of Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva) is ceremonially carried in a palanquin to the chamber of Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati) to spend the night with her, accompanied by priests, music, and devotees. The procession and the ceremony, rich in symbolism about divine matrimony, are believed to have been performed continuously for centuries. Witnessing this ceremony, which takes place around 9 PM, is considered one of the most moving spiritual experiences Madurai offers.
