Karla Caves

The Karla Caves rank among India's oldest and grandest Buddhist rock-cut sanctuaries, carved into a hillside roughly two thousand years ago. The main chaitya hall houses an imposing stupa beneath a ribbed wooden ceiling that has survived centuries largely intact. Elaborate sculpted pillars and figures line the entrance, reflecting the skill of ancient artisans working directly into stone. The complex also shelters the Ekvira Devi temple, drawing pilgrims alongside history enthusiasts. Perched above the valley, the caves offer sweeping views of the surrounding Sahyadri landscape, making the climb worthwhile for both spiritual and scenic reasons.
