Veerabhadra Temple (Lepakshi Temple)

A 16th century Vijayanagara temple famed for its hanging pillar, monolithic carvings, and vivid mythological frescoes.

Veerabhadra Temple stands on Kurma Saila hill as the centerpiece of Lepakshi, built in the 1530s by the brothers Virupanna and Veeranna under the Vijayanagara empire. Seventy carved pillars support the mandapa, one of them famously hanging without touching the ground. Vibrant ceiling frescoes depict scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, while the Kalyana Mandapa and Nagalinga sculpture sit within the same enclosure. Devotees also visit Sita's imprinted footprint inside the complex. The temple remains a protected national monument.
