Oppiliappan Temple

Oppiliappan Temple, also known as Thiruvenkadamudaiyan temple, dates to the late 8th century during the Medieval Chola period. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple is unique for a sacred tradition of never adding salt to the temple's sacred food offering called prasad. According to mythology, Oppiliappan married Bhoomidevi without requiring salt in the cooking, establishing this distinctive ritual practice. The temple represents an important centre of Vaishnavite devotion in medieval Kumbakonam.
