Adi Kumbeswarar Temple

Adi Kumbeswarar Temple is believed to have been constructed by the Cholas in the 7th century and represents the oldest major Shiva shrine in Kumbakonam. The temple occupies a central role in the Mahamaham festival held once every 12 years, when millions of pilgrims gather. The temple houses a unique Shiva lingam and exemplifies typical Chola architectural style with a nine-story gopuram rising 128 feet. The presiding deity is worshipped as Adi Kumbeswarar.
