Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid

A 1,000 year old wooden mosque on the Meenachil river, built without domes in traditional Kerala style.

Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid stands on the banks of the Meenachil river and is counted among the oldest mosques in India, believed to have been built by Habib Dinar, son of Malik Dinar who introduced Islam to Kerala. Constructed almost entirely in wood following Kerala's thachu shastra carpentry tradition, it has no domes or minarets, instead carrying carved gabled roofs, latticed windows, and Quranic verses cut into wooden walls. A stone tank hewn from a single block once served worshippers for ritual washing, and the site is now a state protected monument.
