Kodungallur Kovilakam was the residence of the royal family that ruled the feudal principality of Kodungallur, subordinate first to the Zamorin and later to the Kingdom of Cochin. The palace complex includes the Puthen Kovilakam branch, once run as a gurukulam where scholars studied Sanskrit and poetry under noted teachers. Several members of the royal household became recognised poets in their own right. Though much of the original grandeur has faded, the site remains a marker of Kodungallur's role as a historic seat of Kerala royalty.
