Deopahar Archaeological Site

Ancient hilltop temple ruins near Numaligarh with intricate 10th century stone carvings.

Deopahar crowns a forested hillock in Numaligarh, home to the ruins of a Shiva temple believed to date to the 10th or 11th century. Roughly 150 steps lead up to shattered pillars and stone sculptures depicting Vishnu, Ganesha, and dancing apsaras, carved by Kachari era artisans. The site sits under Archaeological Survey protection and offers views over Karbi Anglong hills and Numaligarh's tea gardens. Giant honey bees migrate here each winter to nest in the sacred Bheleu tree.
