At Poyen, on the edge of Kargil town, the Suru River meets the Wakha Nallah in a confluence that has shaped the town's location for centuries, once forming a natural line of defence for the old Kargil fort nearby. The riverside here offers easy, unhurried walks with views of the surrounding barren ridges and, in season, the green apricot orchards that line the banks. Locals frequent the area in the evenings, and it remains one of the few accessible natural spots within the town itself, away from the bazaar's bustle and the highway traffic passing through.
