Gazpur

The ruins of a royal elephant enclosure near Jorhat, once meant to house a thousand elephants.

Gazpur lies just north of the Bilvesvar Siva Temple near Jorhat and marks the site of an old royal elephant enclosure established by an Ahom king. The name itself derives from gaz, meaning elephant, reflecting the site's original purpose of housing up to a thousand elephants for the kingdom. Today only ruins of the enclosure remain, set amid quiet greenery that makes for an offbeat, leisurely stop rather than a headline attraction.
