Saas Bahu Temple

The Saas Bahu Temples are a pair of 11th century Hindu temples inside Gwalior Fort, formally known as the Sahastrabahu Temple - meaning "one with a thousand arms" - dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The larger temple bears an inscription dated 1150 CE and is considered one of the most architecturally refined temples of the medieval period in central India.

Despite the name "Saas Bahu" (mother-in-law and daughter-in-law), which is a colloquial nickname, both temples are Hindu shrines. The larger temple is richly carved on every surface with deities, celestial figures, and decorative friezes. The smaller temple stands adjacent and follows a similar but scaled-down design.

The temples are located at the eastern end of the Gwalior Fort plateau and are included in the fort entry ticket. They are considered among the finest surviving examples of early medieval temple architecture in Madhya Pradesh.
