Thembang Fortified Village is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the region, its stone fortification walls and traditional Monpa houses earning it a place on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list. Two historic gates, northern and southern, still guard the settlement, and around twenty families live within the fort today. The approach road is rough and partly unpaved, and an Inner Line Permit is required. The surrounding forests shelter rare wildlife, including red pandas, reflecting the community's long-standing conservation practices.
