National Research Centre on Yak

An ICAR research facility above Dirang town dedicated to yak breeding, open to curious visitors.

Set on a hillside above the main town, the National Research Centre on Yak studies breeding, genetics, and husbandry practices for yak herds across the Eastern Himalayas. Established in 1989, the centre maintains over a hundred fifty documented yak varieties and offers visitors a rare close look at an animal central to highland Monpa life. The elevated site also gives sweeping views over the Dirang valley, making it worth combining with a walk rather than treating it as a quick stop.
