Khastung Gompa

One of Arunachal Pradesh''s oldest monasteries, an uphill hike above Dirang, dedicated to the deity Tara.

Perched on a ridge above Dirang Basti, Khastung Gompa is thought to date to the late 16th century, possibly making it older than Tawang Monastery. It belongs to the Gelugpa school and is among the few regional gompas dedicated to Tara, worshipped for peace and compassion. Reaching it means a steady uphill walk past scattered homes, rewarded with a wide view over the Dirang valley. The white stone facade and weathered artwork give it a quieter, more austere character than the town's newer monasteries.
