Anjappar began as a single restaurant in Royapettah in 1964, founded to bring the food of the Chettiar community to a wider audience. It grew into what is now considered the world's largest chain of Chettinad restaurants, with outlets across India and internationally. The menu draws on the culinary traditions of the Nattukottai Chettiars, with richly ground spices and a strong emphasis on non vegetarian dishes, often finished with a boiled egg. Signature offerings include Chettinad chicken and mutton curries, along with a range of dosais, biryanis and breads prepared using freshly ground masalas rather than premade ingredients. Its bold, spice forward style has made it synonymous with Chettinad cuisine for generations of diners in Chennai.
