Bhakra Nangal Dam sits about thirty eight kilometres from Anandpur Sahib and comprises two connected structures, the Bhakra Dam and the smaller Nangal barrage further downstream on the Sutlej River. Built in 1963, Bhakra Dam ranks among the tallest dams in Asia at over two hundred metres, and the reservoir it creates is one of the largest in India. While its distance places it outside Anandpur's immediate pilgrimage circuit, its scale and engineering significance make it a common addition for travellers with an extra day to spare in the region.
